Following the closure of the family run Village Shop in 2002, a group of villagers lead by the Parish Council decided to open a Community run Village Shop.
Having found suitable premises (a listed building at risk), I lead the group that raised funds, applied for grants, and got loans so that we could open the shop in the Autumn of 2004. The Parish Council owns the building and it is let to the Village Shop Association to run it as an Industrial Provident Society, which means profits go back into the Community.
It was the first Community Shop in Northamptonshire and in 2005 the shop won the “Best Rural Retailer in the Southern Region” award from the Countryside Alliance. It continues to thrive due to the efforts of it’s Manager, an amazing team of volunteers, and the direction provided by the elected Management Committee.
It is a great example of a Community pulling together for the benefit of all. We can achieve the same for your village.
